11 day baby resuscitated, pacemaker installed

Among some of its rare medical accomplishments, a wonderful medical feat of installing a pacemaker in the heart of an eleven day old infant takes its pride seat.

Born with a congenital heart block, the child, son of Avinash and Vandana Rathod of MSEB Colony in Ashoknagar got a new lease of life, after a team of specialists of Jehangir Hospital performed a complicated surgery and installed a pacemaker in the heart of the infant, while he was still on the ventilator.

Spearheaded by Dr Pradhan, a team of doctors decided to go in for a three hour long surgery following the child’s intense respiratory distress. With no such history to fall back on in times of need, the team of doctors  implanted the pacemaker directly to the baby’s heart, whereas the pacemaker’s can was put into the abdominal wallet as the chest space of the baby was too small to support it.

Immediately after the operation, the baby’s heart showed signs of improvement and within 12 hours he was normal. This medical breakthrough has set the precedent for similar such rare surgeries and broached a new chapter in the medical history.
